چکیده
ABSTRACT We present ULTRACAM multiband optical photometry of two transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs), PSR J1023+0038 and J1227−4853, taken while both were in their radio pulsar states. The light curves show significant asymmetry about the flux maxima all observed bands, suggesting an asymmetric source heating system. model using icarus binary code, models with additional ‘hotspot’ contribution anisotropic heat redistribution to treat asymmetry. Our modelling reveals companion stars underfilled Roche lobes PSRs lobe filling factors range f ∼ 0.82−0.92. While volume-averaged are closer unity, underfilling is unexpected from tMSPs as they must rapidly overfill start transferring mass, which occurs on time-scale weeks or months. discuss motivation validity our extensions implications lobe, suggest future work further investigate role factor tMSP cycle.

متن کاملOptical Photometry and Spectroscopy of the Accretion - Powered Millisecond Pulsar HETE J 1900 . 1 – 2455
We present phase resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the accreting millisecond pulsar HETE J1900.1−2455. Our R-band light curves exhibit a sinusoidal modulation, at close to the orbital period, which we initially attributed to X-ray heating of the irradiated face of the secondary star. However, further analysis reveals that the source of the modulation is more likely due to superhum...
متن کاملComptonization in the X-ray Spectra of Radio Millisecond Pulsars
The majority of X-ray-detected rotationpowered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) appear to exhibit predominantly thermal emission, believed to originate from the heated magnetic polar caps of the pulsar. In the nearest MSP, J0437–4715 a faint PL is also observed at >3 keV, usually associated with magnetospheric emission processes. However, the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs may instead b...
متن کاملOptical Studies of Companions to Millisecond Pulsars
Optical observations of the companions of pulsars can help determine the properties of the binaries, as well as those of their components, and give clues to the preceding evolution. In this review, we first describe the different classes of binary pulsars, and we present a table with a summary of what is known about their optical counterparts. Next, we focus on the class of pulsars that have lo...
متن کاملOptical Studies of Millisecond Pulsar Companions
In observations of four binary millisecond pulsars with the Palomar 200-inch telescope , we have detected white dwarf companions to PSRs J1640+2224 and J2145?0750 and placed upper limits of m r = 24 and m r = 25 on companions to PSRs J0751+1807 and J2229+2643. The temperature inferred for the companion to PSR J1640+2224 is T = (3700 300) K. The luminosity inferred for a star at a distance of 1....
